TROUBLESHOOTING
1. Be sure the burner switch is in the on position. There is often a switch at the top of the basement stairs. It is very common for adults and children to accidentally hit the switch when walking by or carrying something to and from the basement.
2. Dead batteries in a programmable thermostat. Once the batteries go completely dead, the display will be blank and the thermostat will not operate the heating system. Replacing the batteries once a year should prevent the heating/cooling system from shutting down due to lack of battery power.
3. Thermostat should be set above room temperature. If you run a pellet stove or wood stove make sure that you run your forced hot water heating system so that it doesn't freeze inside the walls. Just because your house is warm due to the stoves, your forced hot water pipes may be close to an outside wall and freeze. This is a common problem with people who have pellet stoves and wood stoves who do not run their forced hot water heating systems. You may need to override your thermostats if your house is over 70 degrees. Your forced hot water system will not turn on unless you put the thermostat setting higher than the thermostat is sensing and reading. Example: Your wood stove or pellet stove is keeping the house at 74 you would have to put your thermostat to 75 or 76 for the forced hot water system to turn on.
4. Make sure there is oil in the tank. Running your tank out of oil is never a good thing. Try to order when you have between 1/4 and 1/2 tank of oil. Running out of oil can be costly, cause frozen pipes and is generally not very good for your heating system.
5. Press reset button ONLY once. DO NOT TRY THE RESET BUTTON MORE THAN ONCE—each time you hit the reset button it pumps oil into the firing chamber. If you push the button multiple times, when the burner finally re-fires it will ignite all that excess fuel at once and can cause a kick back. Check to see if flame comes on.
6. If burner does not run at all and isn't getting power, check for loose or blown fuse. Check to make sure circuit breaker is turned on.
